“Lick-On Visions” Sonnet
Maurice Oliver

Smudges on a newspaper.
Red camellia flowers.
Night fog along the sea.
Goldfish or onion rolls.
A basket of Easter eggs.
Sulphur air after
fireworks. Two oblong
cylinders. Cold tea on a
tray. Dolls propped up
in a chair. Test tube
babies. Skid marks across
a highway. Whales as plaster
bookends. A Rodin original.
One ruined castle. Rolls
of wax paper. Huckleberries
silver against logs. A
hallway of clocks ticking.
An imaginary horizontal
plane. The interior of
the senses after impact.
