Tranquility
Suzanne Scarfone

the grief-green water drifts
and you hunger to stay
awake
you will not disappoint
yourself
you think
all things are made of this
     and this is the void
and in this void is tranquility

you close your eyes
and the tired skin stills
you feel your past running
around you
straw and horses
and wet blue
blossoms and the wind
on your neck
and clouds
here and there
and no
time

you wake
looking for salvation
there is no difference now
between
me and thee
dark and light
river and sky
tree and cloud
shadows list
pines breeze
winds lull
all is one
weightless drench of
endless comfort
a paradise that
smells
of life
