Kathy Fish’s Comments

All three of these stories were built from word prompts. Some writers don’t like word prompts because they feel like the resulting story is somehow inauthentic. I think anything that comes from your own brain and creativity and subconscious is authentic. Just cross that right off your list of things to worry about. Anything that gets you to the page is great. I went back and looked to see what the actual prompt words were and was surprised that “clown” was not one of them! I was all set to say I’d never have written about a clown if I hadn’t been given that word. I guess I just wanted to write about a clown. And the sad road trip story mostly just came from life. We’re always trying to understand the saddest things, right? I’ll probably keep writing sad road trip stories until I understand or I’m worn out, one or the other.
